DESCRIPTION:
Broadcast television and radio programs are an important source of general information about people and events in the Army. Army Public Affairs Broadcast Specialists are involved in creating, filming, reporting, hosting and editing news and entertainment radio and television programs.
Public Affair Broadcast Specialists are primarily responsible for participating in and supervising the operation of audio or video news for Army units or Armed Forces Radio Television Service (AFRTS). Some of your duties as a Broadcast Specialist may include:
- Coordinate release of radio and television information products and visual information to Army units, distribution centers, the Hometown News Release Programs and civilian organizations.
- Preparing scripts and news copy for live and taped news and entertainment programs
- Researching, preparing, and disseminating news releases, radio and television products and Web-based products
- Performing as a radio DJ or television anchor
- Developing ideas for storiesnews gathering, conducting interviews and shooting video
- Working as an escort or liaison for civilian media
- Transmitting news about your Army unit to a satellite distribution center for use by various military and civilian outlets
TRAINING:
Job training for Public Affairs Broadcast Specialists consist of nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 11 weeks, two days of Advanced Individual Training at the Defense Information School at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part learning hands-on how to operate a video camera and program a 30 minute disc jockey show. You'll also participate in a live-to-tape television newscast where you'll work as anchor, control room operator, director and cameraperson. Some of the skills you'll learn are:
- Videography and video editing
- Voice skills for anchoring television news and performing as a disc jockey
- Writing news, feature and sports copy for radio and television
- Radio and television programming and production
- Public speaking
- Media relations
Advanced level Public Affairs Broadcast Specialist supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same job. They also manage radio/television stations, work within the media spectrum of broadcast and print journalism, provide support to media relations programs, and assist with planning information strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- MUST BE BETWEEN 17-41
- MUST HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA
- MUST BE A U.S CITIZEN
- NO FELONIES
- MUST BE ABLE TO PASS A FULL MEDICAL EXAMINATION
