The Editor in Chief of Editorial/Writing and Reading Basic Skills manages all functions and operations of the editorial group in such a manner that high quality, profitable and market-appropriate educational products are published. Work closely with the Publisher to forecast, budget and report on overall list and to ensure that the functions of the group mesh smoothly with those of other groups. Manage significant growth and profitability of a highly visible and critically important program of titles. Help steer media strategies essential to the development and growth of the publishing program. Propose appropriate budgets and monitor the effectiveness of their use; keep departmental spending in line with budgets. Supervisory responsibilities: Manage two acquisitions editors, one each in Developmental Writing and Developmental Reading, one Associate Editor, and an Editorial Assistant. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. This position can be located in either NYC or Boston.
5 or more years of successful editorial experience with demonstrated managerial ability required; Bachelor's degree (BA) from a four-year college or university; Skills/knowledge/abilities ' (list specific functional areas of knowledge required within a discipline i.e. credit, accounts payable, etc.); Position requires the fostering and management of the creative processes (editorial and authorial) that are the foundation of our business; Strong problem solving skills; Good oral and written communication skills; Good Project Management. ' Reviews editorial publication proposals on all projects, maintains pre-contract involvement on all projects, maintains active planning role on all major projects.
' Establishes and monitors guidelines for use of technology, development and other staff resources
' Responsible for the management of Financial Resources - proposes appropriate budgets and monitors the effectiveness of their use.
' Reviews recommended reprint levels and control obsolescence
' Evaluate and recommend royalty rates and advances based on knowledge of the author market.
' Works closely with publisher to ensure that the group is prepared ' with strength of force, with skills and with information to respond to current challenges and those of the future
' Maintain close liaison with marketing and sales via regular meetings to develop general and specific strategies for publishing
