Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations is an independent national membership organization and a nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that individual and corporate members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested citizens in the United States and other countries can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments.
The Copy Editor will work on the Council's web site which has won national awards as an authoritative and comprehensive source of foreign policy information, analysis, and commentary. The web site is staffed by a team of seasoned journalists. As a result, the position provides an excellent training ground for a career in journalism. The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):
Working with the executive editor and deputy editor to manage, edit, and produce original news stories for cfr.org.
Overseeing stories by setting deadlines, copyediting, and monitoring progress moving through editorial process, and publishing to the Council's website.
Editing of morning Daily News Brief newsletter.
Signing off on a publication, including interactive publications, after it has been filed by the writer/producer and approved by the editor or deputy editor.
Ensuring all cfr.org copy is written according to Council style and with cfr.org's editorial voice.
Assisting the Deputy Editor to position the copy on the website as part of cfr.org's daily news coverage.
Assisting in "beat" coverage through writing Backgrounders, conducting interviews and podcasts.
Helping to maintain contacts with CFR.org outside partners to enhance and build distribution of online material on the web.
Overseeing recruitment and work schedule of CFR.org interns.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong editing skills and a deep interest in pursuing a career in journalism.
Excellent academic credentials, including a concentration on international affairs or journalism.
1+ year(s) related research, writing, and administrative experience in a deadline-driven environment
Experience and ability to work on a wide range of research topics
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Excellent computer skills, including MS Word and Excel, and Internet skills
Familiarity with HTML and Photoshop and Podcast technology preferred
Flexible, positive, team-oriented attitude
