Job Summary: |
The Associate Editor, Food writes and edits food-related articles for Ladies' Home Journal. The incumbent participates in recipe development and testing, produces stories, generates ideas, performs research and fact checking and maintains organizational functions of the department. The Associate Editor, Food oversees the department when Food Editor is out of the office. In addition, incumbent represents the magazine at food events and meetings as requested.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
80% -Food editorial: Writes and edits copy, including recipes, sidebars, titles and captions. Pitches unique story ideas appropriate to LHJ to Food Editor; generate ideas for fresh material and concepts. Develops and produces various stories such as glossaries, The Dish, and Healthy Cook with very limited supervision. Manages all recipe styling. Participates in recipe showings to the EIC and photo-shoot planning meetings with Food Editor and art department. Cuts stories to fit in layouts; read galleys and boards. Monitors recipe status and moves appropriately through editorial process. Serves as liaison to Public Relations and marketing contacts; cultivates and maintains positive working relationships. Manages fact checking and research. Revises and styles recipes; performs fact checking of all food edit. Maintains materials needed for fact checking and research backup, including product sourcing and credits. Commissions nutritional analysis, revises to LHJ calculations and inputs into files. Participates in relationship with LHJ.com; develops stories and oversees work on the recipe center and retroactive database. Serves as point person for Meredith Creative Library and Recipe Database. 20% -Test kitchen and food styling: Oversees Food Department invoices, inventory, cookbook library and expen-ditures including mail and package flow. Manages test kitchen including groceries and products, maintenance, repair and upkeep of kitchen facility as needed. Coordinates other Meredith departments' use of kitchen facility. Serves as food styling assistant on photo shoots. Organizes travel plans, location logistics and styling. |

MINIMUM Qualifications All must be met to be considered.
EDUCATION Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English or related field, or equivalent training and/or experience. Degree from an accredited culinary school for a chef/pastry certificate preferred.
EXPERIENCE Minimum of four years related editorial experience. Previous recipe testing and food styling experience. Significant kitchen experience, from restaurant, catering business or test kitchen.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Good writing and editing skills. Good interpersonal skills. Advanced fact checking and research skills - must be resourceful, savvy and accurate. Knowledge of food field and industry contacts. Proficiency with Mac, Microsoft Word, and internet. Familiarity with Adobe programs. Ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize. Must display high degree of interest in the subject matter. Able to think creatively to conceptualize viable stories/recipes. Must possess good knife skills. Demonstrated ability to bake as well as cook savory dishes. |
