Director,Engineering/Architectural Design
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Directs all design staff activities concerning contract document production for construction projects. Reviews and approves all plans, specifications, estimates and calculations to ensure constructability and compliance with regulatory agency requirements and accepted engineering practice. Certifies designs are correct by signing and sealing contract documents in accordance with state statute.
2. Directs activities for outside consultant design projects and task order assignments managed by Facilities Management/Design Services Unit.
3. Serves as in-house design expert, answering questions and resolving problems encountered by other CP&P units. Reviews and approves consultant/vendor plans submitted to Real Estate Department for leased space projects. Reviews and/or manages staff review of plans and specifications prepared by consultants for all CP&P construction projects.
4. Directs staff in the review and approval of shop drawings, product cut sheets, construction schedules, applications for payment, and other construction submittals. Directs Construction Managers on design issues and field modifications. Provides oversight of contractor progress and construction methods. Reviews and approves construction change orders.
5. Establishes design parameters and develops conceptual designs and building programs for proposed bus and rail facility capital projects. Prepares cost estimates, project budgets and construction schedules. Implements capital funding requests. Presents project proposals as licensed design professional before local municipal boards and regional regulatory agencies.
6. Supports ongoing programs to inspect and repair all passenger facilities, high-level platforms, and crew and maintenance/repair facilities for Bus, Light Rail and Rail Operations.
7. Resolves daily staff issues, assigns work, coordinates staff training, prepares performance appraisals, and interviews/hires new employees. Responsible for the development of short- and long-term departmental goals.

KNOWLEDGE
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Bachelors Degree in Architecture, seven (7) years of progressive applied experience in design and construction of building systems for public transportation facilities, and three (3) years previous experience in the supervision of architectural design staff required. Extensive knowledge of construction codes required, and experience with historic building restoration desired. NJ Registered Architect license required; NJUCC subcode licensure desired.
